Humpback Whale Season in Australia: Months by Coast

When is humpback whale season in Australia? On the east coast, humpbacks are generally seen from May through November. But “whale season” is not one date on one beach.

The northbound migration passes Queensland mainly from May to July. On the southbound journey, many whales travel back past the coast, and some enter Hervey Bay from August to October.

The coast, the direction the whales are travelling, the weather and the year all matter. A season tells you when whales are more likely to be in a region. It does not promise a sighting on a particular trip.

What months are humpback whales in New South Wales?

New South Wales marks the migration season from May, when whales begin moving north from Antarctic feeding grounds toward warmer breeding areas. They pass the NSW coast again as they travel south later in the year.

The NSW Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water notes that the exact timing varies. It also notes that the migration is visible from headlands and coastal areas.

That gives visitors a long window, but not the same experience every month, which is part of the charm. Early in the season, many whales are travelling north. Later, southbound animals may include mothers and calves returning toward feeding grounds. Those are broad patterns, not a promise that every group will fit.

When do whales pass Queensland and Hervey Bay?

Queensland Government guidance says humpbacks generally migrate north along the coast between May and July. During the southward migration, about a quarter of the population enters Hervey Bay. That creates a well-known observation season from August to October.

The same guidance says humpbacks migrate through Queensland waters between May and late November. Regional timing differs. A northbound whale near the Whitsundays is not at the same point in its journey as a whale in Hervey Bay months later.

If you are comparing places, make sure the month you read about belongs to the place you actually plan to visit.

Does Western Australia have the same humpback season?

No. The east and west coasts include different population histories and routes. A single national calendar can blur those differences. Look up the state, the region and the whale population instead of copying a month range from another coast.

Our humpback whale guide separates populations. It also explains why a whale recorded in one region does not automatically predict what happens somewhere else.

What can change the timing?

Government sources note that migration timing can vary with conditions. These include water temperature, sea ice, prey and feeding-ground location. The animals’ route is also not a straight line beside the shore.

Weather and sea state affect whether people can safely watch from land or boat, even when whales are present.

A good plan leaves room for the ocean to be the ocean. Choose a legal viewing option and respect the distance rules. These can change, so check with local authorities. Do not treat a quiet day as a failure. The whale is not late. It is moving on its own calendar.

Questions people ask

What months are humpback whales on the east coast of Australia?

Humpbacks are generally seen on the east coast from May through November. Exact timing varies with the coast, direction of travel, weather and year.

When do humpbacks go north past Queensland?

Queensland Government guidance says humpbacks generally migrate north along the coast between May and July.

When is the Hervey Bay season?

About a quarter of the population enters Hervey Bay on the southward migration, creating an observation season from August to October, according to Queensland Government guidance.

Can any month guarantee a whale sighting?

No. A season shows when whales are more likely to be in a region. It does not promise a sighting on a particular trip.

Wildlife encounters are unpredictable. Whale watching should always follow local regulations and experienced professional guidance. Encounters are never guaranteed and never forced. Ocean Calling works only with vetted, ethical local operators, and every animal is free to approach, or not, entirely on its own terms.
