Mauritius Whale Season: Part of an Indian Ocean Journey

A humpback can cross an ocean border without ever noticing it. Somewhere off Mauritius, an underwater microphone is listening for its song, and researchers in five countries are trying to hear how those journeys connect.

Is the Mauritius whale season really about Mauritius alone? Not quite. As the 2026 whale season started, the IndoCet MYSTRAL project placed hydrophones, which are underwater microphones, in Réunion, Kenya, Mauritius, Madagascar and Mozambique. The project brings regional research groups together to study how humpback whales connect across the region, using sound and other field methods. Mauritius is one listening point in a much larger Indian Ocean network.

What can a hydrophone tell us?

Humpback songs change over time, and they can spread from one population to another. Underwater recorders let researchers hear whales that are too far away, or too deep, to see. Comparing recordings across countries may help scientists understand when whales pass through different areas, and whether they share song patterns.

A hydrophone cannot name every individual whale on its own, and one recording cannot tell a whole migration story. The value comes from listening again and again, using shared methods, and comparing results across the region.

Mauritius: watch from the boat, leave the water to the whales

People who search “Mauritius whales swimming” deserve a direct answer. The Mauritius Tourism Authority says it is an offence to let passengers swim, dive or snorkel with whales during dolphin and whale watching. Watching from a licensed boat is a different activity, and it must follow the current local rules. For us, swimming with whales in Mauritius is a clear no. Wildlife encounters are unpredictable. Whale watching should always follow local regulations and experienced professional guidance.

The season is not a booking promise either. Humpbacks are seasonal visitors, and conditions and sightings vary. The interesting story is what the listening can reveal about their journeys, not how close a boat can get.

A regional project, not a single-island headline

If whale song is your kind of story, follow the recordings across the Indian Ocean, not just around one island. For more, see our guide to where swimming with whales is legal, the Mauritius page in the Ocean Atlas and our list of whale conservation organisations.
