Réunion: humpback season on the west coast

Seven days on Réunion's west coast in humpback season, with two quiet whale mornings, turtles and the green cirque of Salazie.

This retreat is built around one experience: floating at the surface of the Indian Ocean while humpback whales rest, sing and raise their calves below you, on their terms. You arrive on Saturday 7 August 2027. The whale mornings are Sunday 8 and Tuesday 10 August, with two different licensed operators, and by Réunion law all time in the water is between 09:00 and 13:00. On Tuesday an in-water photographer joins us. Thursday is a boat-only day. Between them, a sea-turtle care centre, a talk with local whale researchers and a day in Salazie, with a creole lunch in Hell-Bourg.

Wildlife encounters are unpredictable. Swimming with humpback whales should always follow local regulations and experienced professional guidance.

Real guest reviews: Google · BookRetreats

Conservation-led. Ocean Calling guests never chase, touch or bait animals.

Why Moderate? Open-ocean outings from a boat, with quiet entries from the surface. You should be a confident swimmer in open water.

Who it is for. Everyone who is comfortable in open, deep water with mask, snorkel and fins, beginners and solo travellers welcome. No diving, and you don't need to be an experienced swimmer or fearless, only open.

New or a little nervous?

Your first day, step by step

  1. Day 1 · Welcome to Réunion: Rocío meets you at Roland Garros airport in Saint-Denis, our private van takes you to the west coast to settle in, then a welcome evening with a short talk about the week and the swim rules, and dinner.
  2. Your guide explains the plan and the signals before anything starts in the water.
  3. You choose your pace. You can pause, rest or skip any activity, at any moment, with no pressure to continue.
  4. Nobody chases, touches or baits an animal. The animals decide whether they come close.

Questions beginners ask

What if I feel nervous in the water?
That is very normal, and you are welcome here. Activities are adapted to your level and comfort. Tell your guide or Rocío, and you can pause, rest or skip an activity at any moment.
What if I cannot clear my ears?
Equalising is taught in small steps by your instructor, and nobody is asked to push through. If your ears will not clear, you rest, come up or skip that dive or descent.
Will I hold the group back?
Groups are small (six guests at most, and some trips are four), so the pace follows the group and nobody is rushed. Tell Rocío your level before you book, and she will tell you honestly if a trip fits.
Do I need to be fit or experienced?
Each trip page shows its level and what it asks of you. If you are not sure, take our short Is it for me? questions or message Rocío.

Highlights

  • Snorkel near humpback whales in August, inside Réunion's legal swim season, when mothers and calves rest off the west coast.
  • Each whale morning is with a different licensed local operator, both working under the same strict French rules.
  • Two whale mornings in the open ocean, inside the legal window of 09:00 to 13:00, and one boat-only day so the whales, and we, can rest.
  • An in-water photographer joins us on Tuesday, so you can simply be there, and you can always say no to being photographed.
  • A visit to a sea-turtle care centre and a talk with local whale researchers about what they see each season.
  • A day in the green cirque of Salazie, past waterfalls to Hell-Bourg, with a slow walk and a creole lunch together.
  • Breakfast, lunch and dinner every day, so after a morning on the ocean there is nothing to organise.
  • Founder-led by Rocío and wildlife-first: no chasing, no touching, and the ocean decides what happens.

The rhythm of your days

  1. Day 1 · Welcome to Réunion: Rocío meets you at Roland Garros airport in Saint-Denis, our private van takes you to the west coast to settle in, then a welcome evening with a short talk about the week and the swim rules, and dinner.
  2. Day 2 · The first whale morning: early breakfast, then out with our first licensed operator, with in-water time only between 09:00 and 13:00. If a whale is calm and the skipper says yes, we slip in quietly from the surface. Afternoon free to rest.
  3. Day 3 · Turtles and the people who study whales: a visit to a sea-turtle care and observation centre, where we look and never touch, and a talk with local whale researchers. A rest day for the whales, and for us.
  4. Day 4 · The second whale morning, with our photographer: a different licensed operator, the same quiet rules, in-water time only between 09:00 and 13:00. We take turns in the water so the group stays inside the legal limit of 7.
  5. Day 5 · The cirque of Salazie: we drive into the green heart of the island, past waterfalls, to Hell-Bourg, for a slow walk among the creole houses and a creole lunch together.
  6. Day 6 · Whales and dolphins from the boat: no swimming today, we watch from the boat only. Free afternoon, then a farewell dinner together.
  7. Day 7 · Until next time: breakfast together, then the private van to the airport and onward travel.

Ethics and safety

  • We follow Réunion's rules without exception: in-water approach only from 1 July to 30 September and only between 09:00 and 13:00, licensed operators only, at most 3 boats per group of whales and slow speed near whales.
  • At most 7 people in the water including the guide, for 30 minutes, with extra space for mothers and calves. Our photographer counts in the 7, so we take turns.
  • We never chase or block a whale, and we leave if it moves away. If the conditions are not right, we do not enter the water. One of our three days at sea is boat-only.
  • Whale numbers change a lot from year to year. GLOBICE, the local whale research association, identified 1,156 humpbacks in 2023, about 400 in 2024 and only 79 in 2025. Nobody can say what 2027 will be, so encounters are never guaranteed.
  • Travel has a footprint too, and we say it. We keep the group small and work with licensed local operators who know these waters.
  • Wildlife encounters are unpredictable. Swimming with humpback whales should always follow local regulations and experienced professional guidance.

Practical details

  • Getting there: fly into Roland Garros airport (RUN) in Saint-Denis. Rocío meets you, and our private van takes you to the west coast, about an hour by road.
  • Travel insurance is required.
  • Payment plan: 30% deposit when you book, then monthly payments charged automatically, balance due 60 days before the trip, on 8 June 2027.
  • In August the sea is about 24 °C, comfortable in a 3 mm wetsuit.
  • Every activity is optional. You can stay on the boat, or skip any activity, at any time.
Why we choose slower boats

Speed is one of the simplest things a boat captain controls, and it matters a lot to the animals we visit. Research from many oceans shows the same pattern: a slower boat is less likely to hit a whale, turtle or manatee, gives animals time to move away, and makes less noise under the water.

Slower ships kill fewer whales

A study of 47 recorded ship strikes on large whales found the chance of a deadly injury was 21 per cent at 8.6 knots but 79 per cent at 15 knots. Below 11.8 knots, a strike is more likely to be survived than not.

Vanderlaan & Taggart, 2007, Vessel collisions with whales: the probability of lethal injury based on vessel speed (Marine Mammal Science)

A 10 knot limit works for right whales

Since 2008, the United States has required vessels 65 feet (about 20 metres) or longer to travel at 10 knots or less in set areas and seasons along the East Coast, to protect North Atlantic right whales. A later study estimated these limits cut the risk of deadly ship strikes by 80 to 90 per cent.

Conn & Silber, 2013, Vessel speed restrictions reduce risk of collision-related mortality for North Atlantic right whales (Ecosphere); NOAA Fisheries, Reducing vessel strikes to North Atlantic right whales

Turtles cannot escape fast boats

In Moreton Bay, Queensland, Australia, researchers watched 1,890 green turtle encounters. 60 per cent of turtles moved away from a boat going 4 km/h, but only 22 per cent at 11 km/h and 4 per cent at 19 km/h.

Hazel, Lawler, Marsh & Robson, 2007, Vessel speed increases collision risk for the green turtle Chelonia mydas (Endangered Species Research)

Slow zones save manatees

In Sykes Creek and the Barge Canal on Merritt Island, Florida, eight manatees were killed by boats in the 42 months before year-round slow speed was enforced. In the 42 months after, only one was killed.

Laist & Shaw, 2006, Preliminary evidence that boat speed restrictions reduce deaths of Florida manatees (Marine Mammal Science)

Faster boats are louder

Recordings of 1,582 ships in Haro Strait, between Washington State and British Columbia, showed that most ships get about 1 decibel louder for every extra knot of speed. This noise reaches the high sounds that killer whales use to find food.

Veirs, Veirs & Wood, 2016, Ship noise extends to frequencies used for echolocation by endangered killer whales (PeerJ)

Going slow gives whales quiet time to feed

When ships in Haro Strait were asked to slow to 11 knots, underwater noise fell by 2.5 decibels, about 44 per cent less sound energy. Scientists estimated this cut the feeding time killer whales lose to noise by 22 per cent.

Joy et al., 2019, Potential benefits of vessel slowdowns on endangered southern resident killer whales (Frontiers in Marine Science)

Questions

Will we see whales?
No one can promise that. August is inside the humpback season, but whale numbers change a lot from year to year, and 2025 was very quiet. The whales decide, and we let them go if they move away.
Do I need to be a strong swimmer?
No. You don't need to be an experienced swimmer, but you should be at ease in open, deep water with mask, snorkel, fins and a wetsuit. Beginners are welcome, and you can stay on the boat at any time.
How much does it cost?
CHF 2,140 per person in a shared twin room, or CHF 2,469 in a single room, for 7 to 13 August 2027. Six guests at most. International flights are not included.
How much is the deposit, and how do I pay the rest?
The deposit is 30%: CHF 642 for the twin room, CHF 741 for the single room. The rest is paid in monthly payments, charged automatically, with the balance due on 8 June 2027, 60 days before the trip. If you book later, the plan adjusts by itself.
Can I have a room for myself?
Yes. A single room is CHF 2,469 per person. The same week, the same group and the same table, with a door you can close at the end of the day.
What is included?
Six nights on the west coast, breakfast, lunch and dinner every day, airport transfers and a private van every day, two whale snorkel mornings with two licensed operators, an in-water photographer on Tuesday, a boat-only whale and dolphin watch, the sea-turtle centre and researchers' talk, the Salazie day with a creole lunch, and tips for crews and guides.
Do I need to know how to dive?
No. This is a snorkelling retreat. We slip in quietly from the surface with mask, snorkel and fins. There is no diving.
Can I come alone?
Yes. Come alone, with a partner or with a friend. You do not need to know anyone before arriving. If you are booking as a group, please reach out to Rocío before booking.
