Kimud vs Monad Shoal: Two Thresher Shark Sites Explained
Two seamounts, a short boat ride apart, and the same extraordinary shark. Kimud and Monad are neighbours, not the same place. Knowing which shoal a study or a dive trip means makes the story clearer.
Kimud Shoal and Monad Shoal are two different underwater seamounts in the central Visayan Sea, southeast of Malapascua Island. They sit about seven kilometres apart. Both have plateaus around 15 to 25 metres deep, according to the Important Shark and Ray Areas factsheet.
The names often appear together because pelagic thresher sharks use both areas. But when a study describes a survey at Monad, that does not automatically mean the researchers surveyed Kimud too.
Two shoals, one remarkable shark
Both shoals are steep underwater rises with shallow plateau tops and deep water around them. The regional factsheet identifies pelagic thresher sharks as the qualifying threatened species for the area. It also notes that both shoals are marine protected areas.
Cleaning behaviour has been documented at Monad and also reported at Kimud. That shared behaviour helps explain why both sites matter to divers and researchers.
Why the study site matters
A 2025 stereo-camera study surveyed thresher sharks at Monad Shoal over four months. It used remote video to estimate shark measurements and to model population vulnerability in the Central Visayan Sea.
It is useful evidence for the regional conservation story. But its named field site was Monad. It was not a direct survey of every shark at Kimud.
This is not just a technical footnote. It helps readers understand what we know, and where future research still needs to look.
What to ask before planning a dive
Check which shoal a local trip will visit. Ask about current site conditions and what rules apply that day, because rules can change. Ask how the guide manages distance around the cleaning stations. A dive plan should match your certification, experience and comfort in open water.
Neither site can guarantee a shark encounter. The whole point of a wild animal at a cleaning station is that it decides when to arrive and when to leave. Wildlife encounters are unpredictable. Diving with thresher sharks should always follow local regulations and experienced professional guidance.

Questions people ask
Are Kimud and Monad the same place?
No. They are two different underwater seamounts in the central Visayan Sea, southeast of Malapascua Island, about seven kilometres apart.
How deep are the shoals?
The Important Shark and Ray Areas factsheet says both have plateaus around 15 to 25 metres deep.
Did the 2025 study survey Kimud?
Its named field site was Monad Shoal. It was not a direct survey of every shark at Kimud.
Can I be sure of seeing a thresher shark?
No. Neither site can guarantee a shark encounter.
Wildlife encounters are never guaranteed and never forced. Ocean Calling works only with vetted, ethical local operators, and every animal is free to approach, or not, entirely on its own terms.
