Tonga Whale Research Is Listening to Local Knowledge
The whales return to Tonga every year. The new question is what people who live beside them can tell researchers that a short survey at sea cannot.

Think of someone who has watched the same bay in Tonga for decades. They know when the first blows appear, which winds bring the whales closer, which seasons felt different. Can that kind of knowledge help whale science? A new project says yes. On 23 September 2026, ABC Pacific reported on the Tongan Whale Tourism Project, which brings local knowledge together with scientific research to learn about humpback whales and the waters they return to. It is a story about migration, memory, and who gets to explain a whale's home.
A migration is more than a line on a map
Humpbacks travel between feeding areas and breeding areas. But a route on a map does not explain why a place matters to a whale, or to the people who live there. Long familiarity with a coastline can hold details about timing, weather, whale behaviour and changing conditions. Scientific monitoring can test patterns and compare what people see across seasons.
When both work together with respect, the result can be richer than either one alone. It is also a reminder that research in Tonga should never treat local communities as scenery around a whale encounter.
What should visitors know about Tonga whale season?
Tonga's official tourism information and the International Whaling Commission both name July to October as the core humpback season. A whale may be travelling, resting, singing or caring for a calf. An encounter is never a scheduled show.
Tonga allows licensed in-water whale encounters. Every trip must follow the current local rules and the operator's own protocol. A good guide does not promise a swim, a calf or a close approach. If a whale changes direction or leaves, that is the whale making the call.
Wildlife encounters are unpredictable. Swimming with humpback whales should always follow local regulations and experienced professional guidance.
Tonga or French Polynesia?
They are different places, with different seasons and different rules for encounters. To compare the practical and ethical details, read our Moʻorea, Tonga and Réunion whale comparison and the humpback whale swimming guide. For the rules in Tonga, see Tonga's whale swimming rules.
If Tonga is on your list, take time to learn about the people and the rules around the water, just as carefully as you learn about the whale season.

What is the Tongan Whale Tourism Project?
ABC Pacific describes it as a project that brings local knowledge together with scientific research to learn about humpback whales and the waters they return to.
