Why Tonga

In Vava'u and Ha'apai, regulated in-water humpback whale encounters with licensed guides are possible during the official whale season, from July to October. Reef turtles live around the islands, and manta rays are seen now and then. Spinner dolphins may be seen from the boat, and orcas and sperm whales only rarely. The dry season, from May to October, overlaps with the whale months.

Conservation-led. Ocean Calling guests never chase, touch or bait animals.

Our ethics check

Can we travel here ethically?

Ethics pass, with care

Good with the right operator. Here is how we choose.

Tonga has a real legal framework for swimming with humpback whales: licensed boats, a local guide, and only four swimmers with one group at a time. A study of the 2016 and 2017 seasons in Vava'u found that rest times for mothers and calves were not always respected, and some approaches made whales swim away. We only work with guides who respect every rule, approach slowly and quietly, and let the whale decide.

Checked 30 Sep 2026. Places change, so we look again every year.
