Black noddy
Anous minutus
A dark seabird with a pale crown, nesting in island trees and feeding over the lagoon. Seabirds go where the fish are, and no sighting is a promise.
Least Concern (IUCN, 2020) means it is not at high risk of extinction at present, and the global population is large.

Length
About 35 to 37 cm (14 to 15 in); wingspan about 66 to 72 cm (26 to 28 in). SeaLifeBase gives up to 39 cm (15 in)
Weight
About 98 to 144 g (3.5 to 5.1 oz)
Next to a person
About as long as an adult's forearm and hand together, and lighter than a large apple
What it eats
Fish and squid, taken by flying low over the sea. They often hunt in flocks over schools of predatory fish, dipping, hovering and snatching prey from the surface or making shallow plunges.
Around people
Calm, give space
How it lives
Black noddies nest in colonies, often in trees such as Pisonia, on a platform of dried leaves held together with droppings. They lay one egg a season and reuse nests in later years. The birds are very tolerant of people, which makes it more important not to disturb them. Their droppings feed the soil on coral islands.
Where it goes
Noddies feed at sea and come back to the colony to nest. One source says they stay mostly within about 10 km of the coast. I did not find tracking data for the Tuvalu colony.
We only draw a journey on the map when scientists have tracked it or clearly documented it. For this animal we have not found one yet.
Populations
Found in tropical and subtropical seas, with colonies widespread in the Pacific and scattered in the Caribbean, central Atlantic and northeast Indian Ocean. Seven subspecies are recognised. SeaLifeBase reports over 200,000 breeding pairs worldwide. In Tuvalu, Fualopa islet in the Funafuti Conservation Area has a breeding colony, known locally as taketake.
Meet it respectfully
Watch from a distance and keep your voice low. Stay out of nesting trees and off nesting ground, and never pick up a bird, egg or chick, even though the birds are tolerant. Keep drones away from colonies. Follow the Funafuti Conservation Area rules and the guidance of local rangers and guides.
Fun fact
Tap the bulb to light it up.
It lays a single egg each season and often reuses the same nest the next year.
Its droppings add large amounts of nutrients to coral island soils, which helps island plants grow.
Tuvalu has a breeding colony on Fualopa islet, inside a no-fishing conservation area of about 33 square kilometres.
