Japan
Okinawa's reefs for freediving, with mantas around Ishigaki and winter humpback whales seen from boats.

Story only, for now. We love learning about this place and its ocean, so we share its story here and do not sell trips yet. Checked by Ocean Calling on 30 Sep 2026. Sources: Whale hunt season in Japan closes with reduced catch, Whale and Dolphin Conservation, Dec 2025; Taiji dolphins show up in Okinawa, International Marine Mammal Project, 2021; Kabira Ishizaki Manta Scramble guide, Yaeyama Diving Association rules summarised.
Why: Japan resumed commercial whaling in 2019, so for now we share Okinawa's ocean story and do not promote trips here. In Kerama, whale swimming is not allowed under local rules, and elsewhere on the main island it runs on voluntary guidelines only. We would only ever watch humpbacks from a boat, and we never eat whale or dolphin meat.
This is not a judgement of the people or the ocean here. It only means that today we could not find a visit that meets our animal-welfare and safety standards. Places change, so we look again every year.
🧭 Travel advice, checked 30 Sep 2026. Australia's Smartraveller advises exercising normal safety precautions in Japan. It notes summer heat, typhoon season from May to November, and earthquakes and tsunamis. The US State Department rates Japan at Level 1, dated 15 May 2025. Sources: Smartraveller travel advice, Japan · US State Department travel advisory, Japan Advice differs by passport: check your own government before you plan.

Conservation-led. Ocean Calling guests never chase, touch or bait animals.
When to go
