Cambodia
Quiet islands with seahorses and seagrass, and the last Mekong river dolphins, watched from a small boat.
Ethics pass, with care. We found a way to visit this country that meets our animal-welfare standard, as long as we work with the right local operator. Checked by Ocean Calling on 30 Sep 2026. Sources: Sixth Mekong River Dolphin Calf of 2026 Spotted in Kratie, AKP (Cambodian state news), 2026; Koh Rong National Marine Park: A first for Cambodia, IUCN, 2018; Cambodia creates its first marine national park where pirate fishers prowl, Mongabay, 2018.
Why Cambodia
Cambodia has a short, calm coast on the Gulf of Thailand. The Koh Rong islands became the first large marine national park of the country in 2018, and around Kep and Kampot the seagrass is slowly coming back, with six kinds of seahorse and, very rarely, a dugong. The water is often green and the visibility is low, so this is a gentle place for slow snorkelling and macro diving, not for big reefs. Inland, in the Mekong at Kratie, about 118 Irrawaddy dolphins lived in 2026, and river guards protect them. We would only watch them from a boat with the engine off, never swim. Governments advise against travel near the Thai border after the 2025 fighting. The places here are far from that border.
Conservation-led. Ocean Calling guests never chase, touch or bait animals.

Can we travel here ethically?
Ethics pass, with care
Good with the right operator. Here is how we choose.
Visitor rules for the park are not yet confirmed, so we treat Koh Rong as a place to learn about for now, and we would only snorkel slowly and look at seahorses without touching.
Checked 30 Sep 2026. Places change, so we look again every year.
Where in Cambodia
Short notes from our research. Wildlife is never guaranteed.
Koh Rong and Koh Rong Samloem
ExploringIsland reefs and sandy bays inside Cambodia's first marine national park, known for small life like seahorses.
🤿 In the water: Seahorses (small, on shallow sites, we look and never touch), Reef fish and hard corals, Stingrays, Nudibranchs
⛵ From the boat or shore, never in the water: Irrawaddy dolphins (rare, from the boat)
When: Dec-Apr. December to April is the dry season, with calmer sea. The water is warm all year, but visibility is often only a few metres, better on the outer islands.
Kep and the Kampot seagrass
ExploringShallow seagrass meadows and small islands where seahorses live, and where dugongs are very rarely seen.
🤿 In the water: Seagrass meadows, Seahorses (shallow sites, with a local guide)
⛵ From the boat or shore, never in the water: Irrawaddy dolphins (coastal, rare), Dugongs (very rare, a feeding trail is more likely than the animal)
When: Dec-Apr. The dry months from December to April bring calmer water. Visibility is low in the seagrass, and dugongs are very rarely seen, so we never promise them.
Kratie and the Mekong dolphin pools
ExploringDeep river pools where Irrawaddy dolphins live, watched in silence from small local boats.
⛵ From the boat or shore, never in the water: Mekong Irrawaddy dolphins (from a boat with the engine off)
When: Dec-May. In the dry season, from about December to May, the river is low and the dolphins gather in the deep pools, so they are easier to see. Swimming is not allowed.
