Dwarf minke whale

Balaenoptera acutorostrata (dwarf form)

Each winter, curious dwarf minke whales visit the northern Great Barrier Reef, and on the right day they may choose to come closer.

Least ConcernIn 30 Atlas countries

Least Concern (IUCN, 2018) means it is not at high risk of extinction worldwide today. The dwarf form has no assessment of its own, so this is the status of the common minke whale.

Length

Up to about 8 m (26 ft); mature at about 6 m (20 ft)

Weight

About 5 to 6 tonnes (11,000 to 13,200 lb) reported; typical weight not well documented

Next to a person

About 4 to 5 adults lying head to toe

What it eats

Krill and small schooling fish, including lanternfish.

Around people

Calm, give space

How it lives

The dwarf minke whale is a small baleen whale that filters krill and small fish from the water. It is a Southern Hemisphere form of the common minke whale. On the northern Great Barrier Reef, many come close to still boats and swimmers by their own choice, sometimes for a long time. Not every whale does this, and many of the whales that approach are younger animals.

Where it goes

Each southern winter, dwarf minke whales visit the northern Great Barrier Reef. About 90% of sightings are in June and July, mostly between Agincourt and the Ribbon Reefs north of Cairns. Some individuals return again and again.

We only draw a journey on the map when scientists have tracked it or clearly documented it. For this animal we have not found one yet.

Populations

Dwarf minke whales live elsewhere in the Southern Hemisphere too, but the predictable winter gathering on the northern Great Barrier Reef and Ribbon Reefs is special to that area and is not found everywhere. It has no scientific name of its own yet, and it is not the same as the Antarctic minke whale.

Meet it respectfully

On the Great Barrier Reef, swimming with these whales is allowed only with endorsed operators under the Reef Authority's Code of Practice. Swimmers hold surface ropes, enter the water at least 30 m away, never swim towards the whales, and never touch them or use flash, so the whale decides how close it comes. Boats without this endorsement must stay 100 m away and may not put swimmers in the water. Outside this managed area, do not assume swimming is legal or appropriate.
