Why Spain
Spain has several protected marine reserves. At Cabo de Palos, the Medes Islands off L'Estartit, Tabarca and El Hierro, protected waters hold large groupers, barracuda and rays. On Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria and Tenerife, rare angel sharks may be seen, look only. Pilot whales and dolphins are watched from the boat off Tenerife and Gran Canaria, and sperm whales off Menorca. Formentera, Ibiza and Jávea offer seagrass meadows, and Mallorca protected reserve reefs.
Conservation-led. Ocean Calling guests never chase, touch or bait animals.
When to go
Timing changes a lot from place to place. See each place below.
We have researched this place and keep learning about it. There is no trip here yet.
Can we travel here ethically?
Ethics pass, with care
Good with the right operator. Here is how we choose.
Spain has national rules for watching whales and dolphins since 2007, and in the Canary Islands only licensed Blue Boat operators may offer trips. Angel sharks are fully protected there since 2019, so we only look. Spain still keeps orcas and dolphins in marine parks, including one on Tenerife, so we never visit those shows and we choose small licensed boats instead.
Checked 26 Sep 2026. Places change, so we look again every year.
