Bulgaria
A Black Sea coast with three small dolphin and porpoise subspecies, and mass beach resorts. Shared as a story only, with no trips.

Story only, for now. We love learning about this place and its ocean, so we share its story here and do not sell trips yet. Checked by Ocean Calling on 6 Oct 2026. Sources: Seasonal Abundance, Density and Distribution of Cetaceans in the Bulgarian Black Sea Shelf, Diversity (MDPI, 2023); Conservation status of cetaceans in the Black Sea, ACCOBAMS SC16 (2024); How long will Bulgaria allow this cruelty? Dolphin Project (Varna dolphinarium).
Why: Bulgaria's Black Sea is home to three protected cetaceans: the harbour porpoise and bottlenose dolphin (both Endangered) and the common dolphin (Vulnerable), and Natura 2000 sites at Shabla and Kaliakra were confirmed as important for them. Green Balkans, a local conservation group supported by ACCOBAMS, tested pingers on turbot gillnets that cut porpoise bycatch by 86 percent. We share this hopeful story and would only ever watch from a respectful distance, never swim with or touch dolphins.
🧭 Travel advice, checked 30 Sep 2026. The UK FCDO publishes travel advice for Bulgaria and shows no warning against travel to the country as a whole. It covers safety, entry requirements and insurance. Sources: UK FCDO travel advice, Bulgaria Advice differs by passport: check your own government before you plan.
Why Bulgaria
Bulgaria's Black Sea coast is known for beach resorts like Sunny Beach and Golden Sands. Three whales and dolphins live here, all as Black Sea subspecies: the harbour porpoise, the bottlenose dolphin and the common dolphin, and all are protected. Papers name Kaliakra and Cape Emine as hotspots. Spring brings porpoises closer to the shore.
Conservation-led. Ocean Calling guests never chase, touch or bait animals.
When to go
