Guadeloupe
A French island pair with a marine reserve, turtle seagrass and a winter whale season inside a protected sanctuary.
Story only, for now. We love learning about this place and its ocean, so we share its story here and do not sell trips yet. Checked by Ocean Calling on 6 Oct 2026. Sources: Whales in Guadeloupe, Les Iles de Guadeloupe (official tourism board); New order on cetacean approach in Guadeloupe, Martinique, Saint-Martin and Saint-Barthelemy, Outremers 360; The Cousteau Reserve, Les Iles de Guadeloupe.
Why: Guadeloupe lies inside the Agoa marine mammal sanctuary, where humpback whales arrive from about December to May (busiest in February and March) and sperm whales and spotted dolphins can be seen all year. Under the order in force since 1 September 2024, everyone must stay 300 m from whales, only captains trained by the sanctuary may go to 100 m, and swimming with whales is not allowed. The Cousteau Reserve off Bouillante, part of the Guadeloupe National Park, is a place to see green turtles gliding by from a respectful distance. We watch from the boat, keep our distance and never swim with or touch the animals.
🧭 Travel advice, checked 30 Sep 2026. The UK FCDO travel advice for Guadeloupe notes that the hurricane season normally runs from June to November, and that attacks cannot be ruled out although there is no recent history of terrorism. Why Guadeloupe
People come for beaches, the Cousteau Reserve snorkel, the volcano and the islands. Humpback whales pass from January to April, with the peak in February and March. Green turtles feed on seagrass and hawksbills use the reef. The whole sea belongs to the Agoa sanctuary, where nobody may come within 300 m of a whale, and swimming with whales is not allowed. For now this is a watch from the boat story only.
Conservation-led. Ocean Calling guests never chase, touch or bait animals.
