Pintuyan Whale Shark Season: When Do the Sharks Arrive in Southern Leyte?

Pintuyan's last reported season ran from October 2025 to 26 May 2026. Use it as a clue, not a promise.

When is whale shark season in Pintuyan? The most recent season we have numbers for ran from October 2025 to 26 May 2026, and the municipal program officially closed on 1 June. That is a good recent reference point. It is not a fixed date the sharks keep every year.

Whale sharks are wild, so opening dates and sightings can change.

So here is the honest answer. Use the last season as a clue, then confirm the next dates with the local tourism office before you build a trip around it.

What the latest season actually tells us

A 2026 report from the Philippine News Agency, quoting local tourism officials, said 9,842 visitors came for Pintuyan's whale shark interaction season, and that the program closed on 1 June. Local records described visitor activity from October 2025 to 26 May 2026.

This is solid evidence that the visitor season covered those months in that year. It does not show that whale sharks arrive on a particular day. It does not show that every outing meets one. And it does not show that the next season will use exactly the same dates.

So treat the 2025 to 2026 dates as a helpful clue, not a schedule the sharks follow.

Why the calendar is not a sighting guarantee

Whale sharks travel through very large areas, so how many are around locally can change. LAMAVE's research in the Philippines uses photo-identification and satellite tags to understand how they move between important habitats.

Its team has documented whale shark connections across the Philippines and neighbouring countries. A shark identified in one place may later be recorded far away.

How to plan without turning the animal into a promise

Before you book transport, ask the Pintuyan municipal tourism office a few questions.

  • Has the next whale shark season officially opened?
  • On which dates is the local interaction program running?
  • What are the current visitor rules, and how long does a trip last?
  • What happens if weather, sea conditions or local guidance cancel the outing?

The official provincial page says a people's organisation runs the activity, and its members work as guides and spotters. Starting with the local program means your questions reach the people who are responsible for the experience. Rules and dates can change, so ask each time.

Wildlife encounters are unpredictable. Swimming with whale sharks should always follow local regulations and experienced professional guidance.

More than one headline fish

Pintuyan sits inside the new Panaon Island Protected Seascape. Its waters also hold reefs and plenty of other wildlife. Whale sharks may be the headline, but they are not the only reason this coast matters.

Read our Philippines ocean guide before you decide whether the route and the season fit your trip. A good wildlife plan always leaves room for the sea to say "not today".

Questions people ask

When did Pintuyan’s most recent whale shark season run?

It ran from October 2025 to 26 May 2026, and the municipal program officially closed on 1 June.

Will the next season have the same dates?

Not necessarily. The last season is a reference point, not a fixed yearly promise. Confirm the next dates with the local tourism office.

Can anyone guarantee a whale shark sighting?

No. Whale sharks are wild and move through large areas. The season shows when a local activity is scheduled, not when the sharks will appear.

Who should I ask before booking?

Start with the Pintuyan municipal tourism office. The official provincial page says a people's organisation of guides and spotters runs the activity.

Wildlife encounters are never guaranteed and never forced. Ocean Calling works only with vetted, ethical local operators, and every animal is free to approach, or not, entirely on its own terms.
