Grey seal pups in the Stockholm archipelago: watch from afar

A seal pup on a rock looks so close, so calm, so easy to reach. It is not an invitation. The kindest way to watch is quiet, distant and brief.

How do you watch grey seal pups in the Stockholm archipelago without disturbing them? Stay far back, use binoculars, and leave before they notice you. Grey seals can be seen along Sweden's Baltic coast and archipelago, and resting animals, especially mothers and pups, need that space.

The Stockholm archipelago is also part of a changing story. Swedish researchers are studying whether grey seals are moving farther into coastal waters as their food shifts.

How to watch without disturbing a seal

Use binoculars or a camera with a zoom lens. Stay on marked paths or on your boat. Keep dogs close. Never approach a resting group.

If a seal lifts its head again and again, moves away or looks unsettled, you are too close. Give it more space.

What researchers are asking about Baltic seals

The Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences is investigating whether large-scale herring fishing may affect where grey seals look for food. The team compares environmental monitoring data with reported sightings of seals and cormorants.

The researchers have not concluded that trawling is causing seals to move. It is an open research question about how food, wildlife and coastal ecosystems connect.

Keep the encounter small

Choose a gentle way to explore. Check local nature-reserve rules, as they can change. Do not land on small skerries where seals or birds are resting.

Nämdöskärgården National Park, created in the Stockholm archipelago in 2025, protects a largely marine landscape, with seagrass, bladderwrack and mussel beds.

See our Sweden ocean guide for more coastal wildlife context. You can also read why touching marine animals harms them.

A good pair of binoculars brings you close enough to notice everything, and keeps you far enough away to leave the seals in peace.

Questions people ask

How should I watch grey seal pups?

Use binoculars or a zoom lens. Stay on marked paths or on your boat, keep dogs close and never approach a resting group.

What if a seal looks unsettled?

If a seal lifts its head again and again, moves away or looks unsettled, give it more space.

Is trawling moving seals into the archipelago?

The researchers have not concluded that trawling is causing seals to move. It is an open research question.

Should I check local rules?

Yes. Check local nature-reserve rules before you go, and do not land on small skerries where seals or birds are resting. Rules can change.

Wildlife encounters are never guaranteed and never forced. Ocean Calling works only with vetted, ethical local operators, and every animal is free to approach, or not, entirely on its own terms.
