Rurutu Humpback Whales in French Polynesia

Picture yourself on a cliff above the open Pacific, watching a whale blow, not from a boat but from the land. On Rurutu, humpback whales can come that close to the island. It is a small place far south of Tahiti, and it tells a different whale story from the one most people know.

So can you see humpback whales on Rurutu? Often, yes, in the southern winter, roughly July to October, and sometimes even from the shore. Rurutu sits in the north of the Austral Islands, south of Tahiti and Moʻorea. It shares French Polynesia's marine mammal sanctuary and its humpback season, but it can feel like a very different journey.

If you already love the idea of Moʻorea and wonder what a smaller, more remote whale island would be like, this one is for you.

An island of cliffs, caves and a small lagoon

Tahiti Tourisme describes Rurutu as an island of steep cliffs facing the ocean, dotted with caves, with limestone caverns full of stalactites and stalagmites, and only a small lagoon.

It is also an island of craft. Pandanus leaves dry in front of many houses, ready to be woven into hats, baskets and mats.

This is not Moʻorea with fewer people. Flights and places to stay can be more limited, and the ocean around a small island with a narrow lagoon has its own character. "Quieter" may describe how the island feels. It is not a promise that there will be no other boats, or that a whale encounter will be easier.

Why do Rurutu humpback whales come so close?

Humpbacks arrive in French Polynesia in the southern winter to mate and give birth. Te mana o te moana, the marine conservation foundation, notes that they come back every year from July to October, and that the Marine Mammal Sanctuary of French Polynesia was created on 13 May 2002. Tourism sources give a slightly longer window for Rurutu, from July to November, with September and October described as the best months.

Nature does not read calendars, so these are patterns, not promises.

The Marine Mammal Protected Areas Task Force has recognised the Austral Archipelago as an Important Marine Mammal Area covering 32,288 square kilometres. It describes the area as critical winter habitat for calving and mating, where whales of all sexes and ages are present, found mainly close to shore or to the fringing reef.

These whales are part of the Oceania humpback population, estimated at 4,329 whales in 2003. The IUCN classifies this subpopulation as Endangered. So every mother resting near this reef matters.

Same rules as Moʻorea?

Yes. The main rules are the same across French Polynesia, and they became stricter before the 2025 season.

Authorised boats may not come closer than 100 metres to a whale. Private boats must stay at least 300 metres away. No more than six people may be in the water, with a certified guide. Only three authorised boats may be in an observation zone at the same time. And observation is only allowed from 20 July to 20 November, between 7.30 and 17.30. Local news also reports quotas set island by island by decree.

So a sanctuary does not give every boat a swim permit. Each operator needs its own current authorisation and its own local plan. Tahiti Tourisme says it simply: whale watching is strictly regulated, only accredited professionals may organise it, approaching the whales is forbidden, and any interaction must be started by the animals themselves. For the full picture, we explain how French Polynesia regulates whale tourism.

Wildlife encounters are unpredictable. Swimming with humpback whales should always follow local regulations and experienced professional guidance.

How to be a good guest

Wherever you meet humpbacks in French Polynesia, choose an authorised professional. Ask the team to explain its permits, how it approaches whales, and when everyone stays on the boat. Ask what happens when a mother and calf are resting. A good team will tell you that a resting pair is left in peace, and that the day may simply be spent watching from a distance.

In the water, get in quietly, float calmly and let the whale decide. Never chase, touch or block a whale, and never swim towards a calf.

From the shore, binoculars and some patience can give you just as much. On whale days I also keep a long-sleeve rash guard in my bag, for the sun on the boat or on the cliffs.

Can Ocean Calling take me to Rurutu?

Not yet, and we would rather say so clearly. Rurutu is not one of our trips. Before we could ever offer it, we would need a licensed boat team and accommodation we have checked ourselves, in the same careful way we work in Moʻorea.

Until then, Rurutu is a place we keep learning about, without borrowing Moʻorea's readiness or promising sightings. For a whale trip we host, there is our Moʻorea retreat in September 2027, where we keep the group small and the whales set the pace.

Questions people ask

When is humpback season in Rurutu?

Humpbacks visit French Polynesia in the southern winter, roughly July to October or November depending on the source. Regulated observation runs from 20 July to 20 November.

Is Rurutu quieter than Moʻorea?

It is smaller and more remote, and it may feel quieter. But we cannot promise that there will be no other boats, or that encounters will be easier.

Can I see whales from land on Rurutu?

Sometimes. Tahiti Tourisme notes that on Rurutu you can even spot whales from the shore. As always, sightings are never guaranteed.

Wildlife encounters are never guaranteed and never forced. Ocean Calling works only with vetted, ethical local operators, and every animal is free to approach, or not, entirely on its own terms.
