Finetooth shark
Carcharhinus isodon
A slim shark of shallow bays and beaches. No sighting is ever a promise, and it keeps its own company.
Near Threatened (IUCN, 2019) means it is close to qualifying as threatened, so it needs watching.
Length
Adults average about 1.6 to 1.7 m (5.2 to 5.4 ft). The largest recorded are about 1.9 to 2 m (6.2 to 6.6 ft). One source lists up to 3.4 m, which the others do not support
Weight
Not given in the sources I read. Newborns are about 48 to 64 cm (19 to 25 in) long
Next to a person
About as long as a tall adult, up to a little longer
What it eats
Mostly small bony fish such as Atlantic menhaden, mullet, Spanish mackerel and spot, with some squid and crustaceans. Its small, needle-like teeth suit slippery prey.
Around people
Shy, give space
How it lives
It lives close to shore in bays, lagoons and estuaries, in water usually no deeper than about 10 m in summer and 20 m in winter, and forms large schools. It gives birth to live young after about 12 months. Litters are 2 to 6 pups, born every other year, according to one source. The oldest recorded age is about 22 years. It has never been linked with an attack on a person.
Where it goes
It moves with the seasons. Sources describe movements between the Carolinas and warmer southern waters, and a move away when the surface water drops below about 20 C (68 F).
We only draw a journey on the map when scientists have tracked it or clearly documented it. For this animal we have not found one yet.
Populations
Global: Near Threatened (IUCN, 2019). Its slow breeding and shallow coastal home make it easy to overfish. In US waters NOAA reports the stock as not overfished and not subject to overfishing (2007 assessment), and gillnet bans in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and Texas have helped. Records from the eastern Atlantic, such as Senegal, are unconfirmed, so the West African countries in the Atlas may rest on misidentified records. I found no population counts for Brazil.
Meet it respectfully
Finetooth sharks use shallow water close to beaches, so give them space and do not crowd them. Never chase, touch, feed or bait one. Do not use fish scraps to draw one in. I did not read any local rules, so follow your guide and local rules.
Fun fact
Tap the bulb to light it up.
Atlantic menhaden are its most important prey in the north-western Atlantic.
A female carries her pups for about a year and usually breeds every other year.
It has never been implicated in an attack on a person.
