Story only

Story only, for now. We love learning about this place and its ocean, so we share its story here and do not sell trips yet. Checked by Ocean Calling on 6 Oct 2026. Sources: Sierra Leone Sea Turtle Conservation Programme - World Turtle Trust; The Solon Foundation - Sierra Leone (2020) - SWOT, State of the World's Sea Turtles; Wildlife of Sierra Leone - Wikipedia.

Why: Sierra Leone's Turtle Islands are a remote archipelago of eight islands where up to five sea turtle species nest between November and April, and Sherbro Island and the Yawri Bay marine protected area add estuary and mangrove habitat. The Conservation Society of Sierra Leone runs a community-based Sea Turtle Conservation Programme across more than 70 coastal villages, and the Fisheries and Aquaculture Act 2018 requires any turtle caught by accident to be released unharmed. We celebrate this work from afar and, if we ever visit, we would watch from a respectful distance and never touch, swim with or disturb a turtle.

Why Sierra Leone

Five sea turtle species are recorded in Sierra Leone waters, and green and leatherback turtles nest on the Turtle Islands, Sherbro Island and the Freetown peninsula. Green turtles nest on the Turtle Islands from September to November. The Sherbro River Estuary is a protected area for fish nurseries, birds and the endangered West African manatee.

Conservation-led. Ocean Calling guests never chase, touch or bait animals.
