Why South Africa
Aliwal Shoal near Umkomaas is known for natural gatherings of ragged-tooth sharks in June and July, for confident certified divers. Sodwana Bay has warm Indian Ocean reef with turtles and rays, and around Cape Town and Hermanus cool kelp forests suit freediving, snorkelling and scuba, with African penguins nearby. From June to November, southern right and humpback whales may be watched from the boat or shore.
Conservation-led. Ocean Calling guests never chase, touch or bait animals.
When to go
Year-round. Timing changes by place and by animal, so check each place below.
We have researched this place and keep learning about it. There is no trip here yet.
Can we travel here ethically?
Ethics pass, with care
Good with the right operator. Here is how we choose.
South Africa has permits for boat based whale watching, and boats without a permit must stay 300 m from whales. Many shark dives here use bait, and a marine park in Durban still keeps dolphins, so we do not join these. We choose natural ragged-tooth shark gatherings without bait, kelp forest dives, and whales watched from a permitted boat or the shore.
Checked 26 Sep 2026. Places change, so we look again every year.
