Known for two species of manta, with seasonal whale sharks and passing humpback whales.

Ethics pass, with care. We found a way to visit this country that meets our animal-welfare standard, as long as we work with the right local operator. Checked by Ocean Calling on 30 Sep 2026. 🧭 Travel advice, checked 30 Sep 2026. The UK FCDO advises against all but essential travel to parts of Mozambique, and against all travel to most of Cabo Delgado Province, with some exceptions such as Pemba and Afungi, plus certain districts of Nampula and Niassa. Why Mozambique
Tofo is known for reef and oceanic mantas, with devil rays, reef sharks and turtles. Whale sharks are seen from November to March, in lower numbers now, and humpback whales pass from July to October, watched from the boat.
Conservation-led. Ocean Calling guests never chase, touch or bait animals.
When to go
Year-round. Timing changes by place and by animal, so check each place below.
We have researched this place and keep learning about it. There is no trip here yet.
Can we travel here ethically?
Ethics pass, with care
Good with the right operator. Here is how we choose.
Since 2021 Mozambique's fishing law protects whale sharks and mantas, after sightings at Tofo fell over the years. Mantas and whale sharks can be met in the wild without feeding. We choose small groups, keep a calm distance, and never touch or chase.
Checked 30 Sep 2026. Places change, so we look again every year.

When: Year-round. Mantas are seen all year. Humpback whales pass from July to October. Whale sharks are seen most from November to March, in lower numbers than before.
Mantas at Tofo, then wildlife coming back in Gorongosa
In the water
Tofo is known for reef life, manta rays and sharks, and humpback whales pass the coast from about July to October.
On land
Gorongosa National Park, in Sofala province in central Mozambique, lost most of its large animals during the civil war. Its 2022 aerial count recorded more than 102,000 animals, the most ever counted there, and waterbuck are now the most numerous antelope in the park.
Tofo and Gorongosa are in different provinces, so this is a two-part trip with a travel day, not a day out. The humpback season at Tofo overlaps the drier months inland; the whale shark months at Tofo (about November to March) do not.
The recovery is real but uneven: some animals came back fast, others are still rare.
Wildlife is never guaranteed, on land or at sea. This is research, not a trip on sale.
