Republic of the Congo
Conkouati-Douli protects leatherback and olive ridley nesting beaches, manatees and passing humpbacks near Pointe-Noire.
Story only, for now. We love learning about this place and its ocean, so we share its story here and do not sell trips yet. Checked by Ocean Calling on 6 Oct 2026. Sources: Turtle patrol, Wildlife Conservation Society; Conkouati-Douli park gets 2,900 km2 marine extension, Afrik21; Conkouati-Douli National Park, National Parks of the World.
Why: Conkouati-Douli National Park, created in 1999 and extended with a 2,900 square kilometre marine area, protects one of the most important leatherback turtle nesting coasts in the world and the first in Africa. Five turtle species nest on its beaches, humpback whales and dolphins use the sea, and manatees live in the lagoons. Trained patrol teams guard the nests at night from November to April, and we honour that work from afar by never disturbing a nesting turtle.
Why Republic of the Congo
Conkouati-Douli National Park covers about 4,100 km2 of sea and 3,800 km2 of land near Pointe-Noire. About 35 percent of the country's coast lies inside it, and leatherback and olive ridley turtles nest there. Humpback, Bryde's and sperm whales and African manatees live in these waters. Beaches near Pointe-Noire have petty and violent crime, and the US advises increased caution.
Conservation-led. Ocean Calling guests never chase, touch or bait animals.
