Why Gabon

Mayumba National Park protects about 60 km of leatherback nesting beaches, some of the most important on Earth. Leatherbacks nest mostly from October to March and humpback whales pass along the whole coast from June to October, with a peak in July and August. Gabon has no legal whale watching rules yet, only voluntary guidelines that a conservation group is helping to turn into law. Some whale trips run in small open fishing boats that may not meet safety standards. We keep whales to the boat and shore, and we are still researching.

Conservation-led. Ocean Calling guests never chase, touch or bait animals.

We have researched this place and keep learning about it. There is no trip here yet.

Our ethics check

Can we travel here ethically?

Ethics pass, with care

Good with the right operator. Here is how we choose.

Turtle nesting and boat whale watching exist here. There is no legal whale watching code yet, only voluntary guidelines, and some trips use small open fishing boats. We would choose only from-the-boat viewing at a distance with proper safety, and never touch turtles or chase whales. We are still learning.

Evidence is still thin here. We are checking again with official sources.

Checked 30 Sep 2026. Places change, so we look again every year.
