Moorea is a sanctuary of volcanic peaks and luminous lagoons where reef passes bring life between deep ocean and protected waters. Between July and November, humpback whales arrive here to rest and give birth in warm Polynesian seas.

This is an extraordinary seven-day ethical ocean journey for beginners and curious explorers: three transformative days earning your freediving or scuba diving certification in calm, crystal-clear lagoon conditions, followed by meaningful ocean experiences — reef exploration, respectful whale encounters, and connection with the rhythm of island life.

Day 1: Arrival — Entering Island Time

Private transfer from ferry or airport to your accommodation surrounded by tropical gardens and lagoon air. Evening welcome dinner with the group, setting intentions for a week shaped by ocean, movement, and discovery.

Day 2–4: Certification — Freediving or Scuba Path

Three guided days earning your freediving or scuba certification in Moorea’s protected lagoon environment. Warm water, excellent visibility, and expert instruction allow progressive learning through breathwork, equalisation, relaxation, and underwater movement.

Each session builds confidence naturally, developing comfort beneath the surface while learning to interact with the ocean safely and respectfully.

By the end of the third day, you complete your certification or advance your skills — gaining the ability to explore marine environments worldwide with awareness and ease.

Day 5: Whale Encounter — The Gentle Giants

Boat excursion in search of humpback whales migrating through Polynesian waters. Encounters follow strict ethical guidelines to protect these animals and their habitat. When conditions allow, quiet in-water observation becomes a rare and powerful experience.

A moment of perspective — sharing space with one of the ocean’s most majestic beings.

Day 6: Lagoon Exploration — Coral & Light

Guided snorkelling through Moorea’s coral gardens, home to reef sharks, rays, turtles, and tropical fish. Moving freely in warm, shallow water allows integration of the skills developed during certification days.

A calm immersion in colour, life, and clarity.

Day 7: Island & Departure — Carrying the Ocean Forward

Island exploration and underwater photoshoot capturing the quiet confidence developed during the week. Final transfer to ferry or airport.

You leave with certification, deeper ocean awareness, and a lasting connection to Polynesian waters.

Responsible whale encounters prioritise the wellbeing of the animals and minimise disturbance to their natural behaviour.

Guidelines include:

Small group sizes in the water
Respectful distance from whales
No touching, chasing, or blocking movement
Entering the water calmly and quietly
Following instructions from experienced local guides

Modern regulations limit the number of swimmers and boats near whales to reduce stress and protect mothers and calves.

Wildlife encounters cannot be guaranteed, as interactions always occur in the animals’ natural habitat and on their terms.

Humpback whales play an important role in marine ecosystems and are protected under international conservation agreements across the Pacific region.

Ethical wildlife tourism helps support local communities while encouraging protection of marine environments for future generations.

Experiencing whales respectfully creates a deeper understanding of our relationship with the ocean — one based on awareness rather than control.
