Our Approach

Not perfect. But intentional.

At Ocean Calling Retreats, how we travel matters as much as where we go.

Every decision — from the operators we choose, to the size of our groups, to the way we enter the water — is made with care. For the ocean. For the communities that live alongside it. For the guests who trust us to guide them in.

This page explains what that looks like in practice.

Values

We believe the ocean deserves to be met with patience.

In a world of fast travel, crowded tours, and manufactured experiences, Ocean Calling Retreats was built around a different set of priorities: slowness, safety, and genuine respect for the natural world.

These aren't marketing words. They shape every retreat we design.

  • Small groups — never more than six guests — so that every person receives real attention, and every marine environment is spared unnecessary pressure.

  • Unhurried itineraries — because the best moments underwater cannot be scheduled.

  • Honest guidance — from Rocío and from local professionals who know these waters intimately.

  • No performance expected — whether you're a beginner or returning guest, you move at the pace that's right for you.

  • Clear, honest communication — before, during, and after every retreat.

The ocean rewards patience.
So do we.

Ethics

Ethical travel is not a trend for us. It's the reason Ocean Calling Retreats exists.

Marine wildlife encounters are only meaningful when they happen on the animal's terms. We do not chase, touch, bait, or manipulate wildlife — ever. We observe. We wait. We leave without a trace.

In the water, this means:

  • We follow strict distance and approach guidelines for all marine encounters.

  • We work exclusively with operators who share our standards — not those who chase whales, crowd reefs, or prioritise photo opportunities over animal welfare.

  • We recommend reef-safe sunscreen and explain why it matters before guests arrive.

  • We choose operators with the smallest possible footprint — small boats, small groups, responsible anchoring.

  • We brief guests on ethical ocean behaviour before every in-water experience.

We also recognise that ocean travel itself has an environmental cost. We do not claim otherwise. What we commit to is making the most responsible choices available to us — and continuing to improve.

We are not perfect.
But we are paying attention.

Impact

We want Ocean Calling Retreat to leave something positive behind — in the water, and on land.

For the ocean:

Every guest who leaves with a deeper understanding of marine life becomes a quiet advocate for it. We consider education one of the most powerful forms of conservation.
When guests see a whale on its own terms — calm, unhurried, unafraid — they carry that experience home. That's impact that lasts far beyond the retreat.

For the industry:

Every booking made with an ethical, small-group operator instead of a mass-market tour sends a signal. We believe that conscious travellers have real power to shift how ocean tourism works — and we're proud to be part of that shift.
We are also exploring partnerships with marine conservation organisations, with the aim of contributing a portion of retreat proceeds to reef monitoring and protection projects. More on this as it develops.

Responsibility

We take responsibility seriously — for our guests, for the places we visit, and for the wider impact of the choices we make.

For our guests:

Safety is non-negotiable. Every in-water experience is guided by trained, certified professionals. Freediving and ocean activities carry real risk, and we manage that risk with structured briefings, clear protocols, and attentive guidance throughout.

Guests are never pushed beyond their comfort level. The ocean is not a performance space.

For the places we visit:

We move as guests in other people's ecosystems and communities. That means staying informed about local regulations, respecting marine protected areas, and choosing locations with care.

We commit to:

  • Never operating in areas where wildlife is under documented stress.

  • Adapting itineraries if conditions suggest the environment needs space.

  • Continuously reviewing our practices as standards in the industry evolve.

Responsibility, for us, is not a fixed destination. It's an ongoing commitment to do better.

Local Communities

The places we travel to are not backdrops. They are home to people, traditions, and ecosystems that existed long before tourism arrived — and that we hope will thrive long after.

Ocean Calling Retreats is built on local knowledge and local partnership. Every retreat runs with the support of guides, boat captains, instructors, drivers, and accommodation providers from the communities we visit. This is not incidental — it's intentional.

What this looks like in practice:

  • We prioritise locally owned operators and accommodation over international chains.

  • We work with local dive and freediving instructors who know their waters, their wildlife, and their coastlines in ways no outsider can replicate.

  • We recommend local, independent restaurants and businesses to our guests.

  • We ensure fair, transparent compensation for all local partners.

  • We brief guests on cultural context and encourage respectful engagement with the places they visit.

We believe that tourism, done with care, can be genuinely good for a place. That the money you spend on a retreat can support families, fund local expertise, and create sustainable livelihoods — not extract from them.

When you book with Ocean Calling Retreats, your retreat contributes to the communities that make it possible.

A final note

We don't have everything figured out. The intersection of travel, conservation, and community is complex — and anyone who claims otherwise isn't paying close enough attention.

What we can promise is that these questions are never far from our thinking. We welcome feedback, honest conversation, and better ideas.

If you'd like to talk about any of this — before or after a retreat — we're always happy to listen.

Common Questions About Our Approach

Do you ever touch or feed marine animals?

Never. Every encounter follows strict non-interference guidelines. We observe — we never chase, touch, bait, or disturb.

How do you choose your local partners?

We work only with licensed, locally-based operators who meet our ethical standards. We visit and vet each partner personally before including them in any retreat.

What if conditions aren't right for a planned encounter?

We adapt. If the environment needs space, the itinerary changes. The ocean's wellbeing comes before any schedule.

Is this approach certified?

We hold certifications in freediving and scuba instruction, and we operate in line with international guidelines for ethical wildlife tourism. We are also exploring formal conservation partnerships — more on this soon.
