Welcome to Mo'orea

You will arrive on September 1st or September 9th 2027 and spend your first two days settling into island life, getting comfortable in the lagoon, and reconnecting with the water. Swim in the crystal-clear shallows, meet the friendly stingrays at North Beachfront, explore vibrant coral gardens, and let yourself find a natural rhythm before the adventure begins.

By Day 3, you’ll feel at home in the ocean and ready for the highlight of the retreat. On September 3rd and 4th, you’ll head beyond the barrier reef for two full days dedicated to humpback whale encounters, accompanied by your experienced guide. These respectful, ethical experiences offer the chance to witness these gentle giants in their natural environment while following local regulations and prioritising their wellbeing.

The days surrounding the whale excursions are just as memorable. Glide alongside blacktip reef sharks in the calm lagoon, discover colourful reefs, venture into Moʻorea’s lush volcanic interior on a 4x4 island explorer tour, and enjoy a beautiful portrait session in the tropical gardens on your final full day. Throughout your stay, you’ll spend six nights in a charming Polynesian waterfront villa, where the lagoon is always only a few steps away.

For meals, you can personalise your experience by choosing between having delicious home-cooked dishes prepared by Mama, our local chef, or enjoying the flexibility of cooking for yourself.

And whenever you feel like slowing down, the kayak is always waiting, the lagoon is always within reach, and the island invites you to simply breathe, float, and be present.

What you will experience

Humpback whales come to Moʻorea to rest. The mothers bring their calves here because the water is warm and protected and safe. They are not performing. They are simply living — and on some days, they allow humans to be nearby while they do.

The encounter begins on the boat. Your guide has been reading the water since dawn — the blow, the surface behaviour, the direction of travel. When the conditions are right and the animals are calm, you slip quietly into the water. No splashing, no chasing, no noise. You hover, you breathe, you watch.

French Polynesia’s regulations are strict: maximum two boats per whale group, no approach closer than 10 metres, no touching, no chasing, calm water entries only. We follow these without exception. The encounter is ethical not because we say so, but because the whale always leads.

We have two full encounter days. The ocean and the whales determine what each day offers. Sightings are never guaranteed — we go out prepared, open, and grateful for whatever unfolds.

Itinerary

Day 1 — September 1 or 9: Arrival in Moʻorea

Evening: Welcome dinner together, prepared by Mama.

Day 2 — September 2 or 10: Into the Lagoon

Evening: Dinner at the villa. An early evening — the whale days begin tomorrow.

Day 3 — September 3 or 11: First Whale Encounter Day
Morning
: An early start out to the private boat. Your guide has been monitoring conditions and whale activity since before you woke up. You head out beyond the barrier reef into open water.

Evening: Return to the villa. Dinner together. Space to absorb what happened in the water today.

Day 4 — September 4 or 12: Second Whale Encounter Day

Evening: A long, slow evening at the villa. Dinner by Mama.

Day 5 — September 5 or 13: Island Explorer & Portrait Session
Morning: A 4x4 day through the volcanic interior of Moʻorea — viewpoints across Cook’s Bay and Opunohu Bay, quiet valleys, pineapple plantations, and lookouts over the lagoon from above.

Evening: Dinner at the villa.

Day 6 — September 6 or 14: Coral Gardens & Free Ocean Time
Morning: Snorkelling the coral gardens — parrotfish, surgeonfish, moray eels, and sea turtles.
Afternoon: Free afternoon. Kayak, rest, explore the village, or float in the lagoon.

Why this experience feels meaningful

This retreat is about more than beautiful marine life and unforgettable ocean moments. In Mo'orea, every encounter is shaped by an ethical approach that puts the wellbeing of the whales first, especially during the delicate season when mothers come to give birth and raise their calves in warm, protected waters.

That care is part of what makes the experience so powerful. Rather than chasing the moment, you learn to meet it with patience, calm, and respect. With fewer people in the water and a gentler pace throughout the retreat, there is space to feel fully present, to build real ocean confidence, and to experience something that stays with you long after you leave.

You are not simply visiting a whale destination. You are choosing an experience that invites you to slow down, reconnect, and encounter the ocean in a way that feels deeply moving, grounded, and real.

Typical day

Morning: swim with the whales or go explore the lagoon with rays and baby sharks!
Late morning: rest, photos
Lunch: shared meal at home (simple, nourishing, local)
Afternoon: free time, lagoon time (kayak / gentle exploration) or optional activity (island exploration, recovery, quiet time)
Evening: dinner + short briefing for the next day

Who is this retreat for?

This journey is created for those who want more than a holiday — who have dreamed of swimming alongside humpback whales and want to do it responsibly, in a setting that feels calm, safe, and carefully held.

This retreat is for you if you:

Have dreamed of swimming alongside humpback whales and want to do it responsibly

Are looking for a meaningful, slow travel experience with genuine connection to nature

Are travelling solo and want community without losing your independence

Care about ethical wildlife encounters and low-impact travel

Want to feel genuinely comfortable in the ocean, whatever your starting point

Want to return home with something real — a memory that doesn’t fade

This retreat is probably not for you if you:

Are looking for a party atmosphere or a high-energy group dynamic

Want a packed activity schedule with no downtime

At Home in the Sanctuary
Your Moorea Stay

You are staying at the heart of Mo'orea’s most iconic marine sanctuary—the very waters people travel across the world and pay for daily boat excursions to see. Here, the "main attraction" is simply your backyard.

The Ultimate Post-Practice Ritual

This isn't just a scheduled tour; it’s your daily reality. After your morning session, the lagoon is yours to explore at your own pace. Grab a kayak from our shore and, within a five-minute glide, you are at the famous sandbank—suspended in waist-deep turquoise with resident stingrays and blacktip reef sharks circling in a display of effortless grace.

Beyond the Crowds

While the crowds arrive on tour boats and eventually leave, you remain. This access allows for a more mindful travel experience, giving you the luxury of time and the freedom of direct access. Whether it’s a solo sunrise paddle or a quiet sunset immersion, you have the opportunity to practice slow travel ocean experiences. This is the Mo'orea most people only see for an hour; for you, it is the rhythm of your entire stay.

A Grounded Perspective

Our retreat is designed to foster a responsible ocean travel connection, recognizing that meaningful change happens through small, conscious choices. By staying directly within the ecosystem, we encourage a science-based travel mindset that values progress over perfection and deep respect for local marine life.

Scuba diving

Dive Centre Partner — Nemo’z Diving Center
For guests adding a freediving or scuba certification course, we work with Nemo’z Diving Center — one of the most established dive operations in French Polynesia, based in Tiahura. Nemo’z has been operating on the island since 1989. In 2024 they launched a dedicated freediving centre in partnership with Bluenery Academy, founded by world champion freediver Guillaume Néry — the first of its kind on the island. Maximum 4 students per course.

Freediving

Bluenery Academy at Nemo’z Diving
For freediving, we chose Bluenery Academy at Nemo’z Diving because it brings the philosophy of Guillaume Néry into the experience, treating freediving not only as a skill, but as a more mindful way of moving through the water. This reflects the atmosphere we want guests to feel in Mo'orea: calm, intentional, supportive, and centred on confidence, awareness, and respect rather than performance.

Your Whale Guide — Nicolas Buray

Nicolas Buray is the founder of Tahiti Shark Expeditions and one of the most experienced marine wildlife guides in French Polynesia. He has spent years reading these waters — not just the surface conditions, but the animals themselves: their behaviour, their patterns, the particular way a mother moves when she’s settled and calm versus when she’s ready to move on.

His expeditions run on private boats — small groups only, by design. Fewer people in the water means fewer disturbances, more genuine encounters, and a guide who can give his full attention to what the animals are doing. Nicolas operates with a wildlife-first philosophy: the whale leads. Always.
