The Whales Come Here to Give Birth.

You Come to Bear Witness.

A 7-day ethical ocean retreat in Mo'orea, French Polynesia — freediving certification, humpback whale encounters, and coral lagoons that don't look real until you're in them.

Mo'orea · French Polynesia

Every retreat is a gentle, responsible & ethical ocean encounter

Welcome to Mo'orea!

Mo'orea is French Polynesia's best-kept secret. Most people fly to Tahiti and stop there. The ones who take the ferry across — a 30-minute crossing into the impossible — find volcanic peaks rising from turquoise lagoons, reef passes channelling life between deep ocean and protected shallows, and waters so clear you can watch a ray's shadow on the sand from the surface.

From July to November, southern hemisphere humpback whales migrate here to rest, mate, and give birth. Mo'orea is one of the few places on earth where encounters with mothers and calves in open water are possible — not staged, not guaranteed, but genuinely possible. When it happens, people describe it as the most significant thing they have ever done in the ocean.

This retreat is built around that possibility. Seven days of freediving or scuba certification in calm lagoon conditions, respectful whale encounters guided by local experts, coral exploration, and mermaid photoshoots in some of the clearest water on the planet. For beginners. For solo travellers. For anyone the ocean has been quietly calling.

Where You Will Stay

During the retreat you'll stay in a peaceful lagoon-side villa surrounded by tropical gardens and views of Mo'orea's dramatic volcanic peaks. Each guest has their own private room — space to rest, recharge, and have quiet moments between ocean sessions. The villa has direct access to the water, a shared kitchen where simple breakfasts come together each morning, and communal spaces that make the group feel like a household rather than a tour.

Accommodation photos are for reference and may vary slightly depending on availability at the time of booking. What stays consistent is the standard: private, calm, close to the lagoon, and far from anything that feels like a resort.

Who This Retreat Is For

This retreat is for people who have thought about swimming with whales and then talked themselves out of it — because they didn't know where to go, who to go with, or whether they were the right kind of person for that sort of thing.

There is no right kind of person. You don't need diving experience. You don't need to be particularly fit or fearless. You need to be genuinely curious about the ocean and willing to share a week with a small group of people who showed up for the same reason.

It's for solo travellers who want to do something that stays with them. For beginners who want to learn in one of the most extraordinary marine environments on earth. For anyone who has ever stood at the edge of the sea and felt that it was asking something of them.

Ocean Path Options

During the retreat, you choose the experience that fits your level and curiosity. Everything is guided with care and adapted to where you are — there is no pressure to perform, only space to progress. We work with trusted partner schools offering AIDA, Molchanovs/WAVE, SSI, and PADI certifications.

The agency and level will depend on coach and school availability during the retreat dates to ensure the group trains well together. If you join a certification course, you'll need to complete the official e-learning before you arrive in Mo'orea. Please don't purchase it independently — once your place is confirmed, your school will send you the correct link directly.

Carry Mo'orea Home With You

You didn't come all the way to French Polynesia to leave without something that proves it was real. A professional photographer joins selected moments of the retreat to capture elegant underwater portraits of each guest — in the lagoon, in open water, and whenever the light and the ocean align. You'll return home with beautifully curated images that honour your time here.

For guests on the freediving path, we also offer mermaid photoshoots — a playful, fluid celebration of how far you've come in the water. Not a performance. Not a costume. A way of moving through Mo'orea's lagoon with ease and intention, and remembering what that felt like.

And then there are the whales. If conditions allow and the animals are calm and willing, a photographer will be in the water with you. Some images from those moments are simply unlike anything else.

THE ETHICAL APPROACH
Respect First. Always.

Mo'orea's humpback whale encounters are governed by strict French Polynesian regulations designed to protect mothers and calves during the most vulnerable period of their lives. We follow every one of them — and go further where we can.

In the water, the group is small. Distances are respected. There is no touching, no chasing, no blocking of movement. You enter calmly and quietly, and you follow the instructions of experienced local guides who have spent years building a relationship with these animals based on patience and restraint.

Ethical wildlife encounters are not a compromise on experience — they are what makes the experience genuine. A whale that chooses to stay near you, because nothing about your presence has alarmed it, is a different encounter entirely from one that has been crowded or pushed. We will always choose the former.

Wildlife sightings can never be guaranteed. Interactions happen on the animals' terms, in their natural habitat, and that is exactly how it should be.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which country does French Polynesia belong to? French Polynesia is an overseas collectivity of France. It has its own culture and identity, but entry rules follow French immigration policies.

Do I need a visa? Many travellers — including those from the EU/Schengen area, the UK, the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Switzerland — do not need a visa for stays under 90 days. Check your specific requirements at france-visas.gouv.fr before travelling, as rules vary by nationality.

What currency is used? French Polynesia uses the CFP franc (XPF), which is pegged to the euro. Some larger businesses accept euros or USD, but pricing is in CFP and change is given in CFP. Credit cards are widely accepted on Mo'orea.

What language is spoken? The official languages are French and Tahitian. English is commonly spoken in Mo'orea's tourism, hospitality, and diving sectors.

What is the weather like in September? September is warm, stable, and ideal for ocean activities. Air temperature is 26–30°C, water temperature 26–28°C. Rainfall is very low, humidity is softened by ocean breeze, and the seas are calm with excellent visibility — the heart of humpback whale calving season.

When is the best time to see humpback whales in Mo'orea? Humpback whales are present in French Polynesian waters from July to November, with peak season running from mid-August to mid-October. September sits at the heart of that window — when mothers with newborn calves are most present, most calm, and encounters in open water are most likely.

Are whale encounters guaranteed? No. Whales are wild animals and their behaviour cannot be controlled or predicted. Encounters depend on ocean conditions, whale presence, and respectful guidelines. September offers excellent chances — some of the highest encounter rates in the Pacific — but the honest answer is that we go out, we look, we wait, and we remain open. When it happens, people are very rarely disappointed.

Where do we stay? In a calm lagoon-side villa surrounded by tropical gardens and mountain views on Mo'orea. Each guest has their own private room. Bathrooms and kitchen are shared in a relaxed, home-style setting. The villa has direct water access and communal spaces that make the group feel natural rather than transactional.

Can I stay in my own villa or hotel instead? Yes. If you prefer to arrange your own accommodation, the retreat can be adjusted to cover logistics, equipment, and activities only.

Is this a resort or boutique hotel? Neither. It is a private island home — comfortable, intimate, and calm — rather than a commercial resort.

Are meals included? Simple breakfast essentials are prepared together each morning. Several meals are naturally included within activities — such as the motu picnic or cultural evenings. On other days you are free to explore local restaurants at your own pace. You'll be informed in advance which meals are included.

Is diving or freediving equipment included? Yes. All standard freediving and scuba equipment needed for your chosen ocean path is included. If you choose to dive with nitrox, the dive centre may charge an additional fee.

Do I need experience to join? No. Beginners are welcome on both the freediving and scuba paths. Everything is guided with care and adapted to your comfort.

What if I have asthma or can't hold my breath? Many guests join with asthma, reduced lung capacity, or limited breath-holding ability. You don't need long breath holds to participate. Freediving coaching and scuba sessions are adapted to your needs, and you will always stay within your safe range. If you have asthma, please bring your inhaler and confirm with your doctor that you're cleared for gentle water activities. Everything is slow, supportive, and pressure-free.

Can I come alone? Yes. Most guests join solo. The group is small, relaxed, inclusive, and naturally social from the first evening.

How many guests will join? The group is intentionally small — enough for connection, few enough that every person receives real attention and guidance throughout the week.

Will I get underwater photos? Yes. A professional photographer captures underwater portraits during selected moments of the retreat — in the lagoon, during whale encounter sessions when conditions allow, and during mermaid photoshoot sessions. Images are shared with you after you return home.

Do I need travel insurance? Strongly recommended. Your policy should cover medical emergencies, ocean activities including freediving and scuba, boat transfers, and any unexpected changes to travel. It is the single most important thing you can do to protect your plans.

What is the cancellation policy? All bookings are final and non-refundable. This allows local guides, instructors, boat operators, and small accommodation providers to plan and reserve resources in advance — and directly supports the communities that make this retreat possible. High-quality travel insurance provides flexibility if plans change unexpectedly.

What should I pack? A detailed packing list will be sent before the retreat. Expect swimwear, a rashguard, light clothing, reef-safe sunscreen, sunglasses, sandals, and anything that keeps you comfortable on and in the water.

How do I get to Mo'orea? You fly into Tahiti (Papeete, FAA) and then take a 30-minute ferry across to Mo'orea. There is also a short domestic flight option. Transfers from the ferry port or airport on arrival are included in the retreat.

Can I stay longer in Mo'orea? Of course — and many guests do. If you'd like recommendations for extra days before or after the retreat, just reach out.

Is there Wi-Fi? Yes. The villa has reliable Wi-Fi suitable for messages, calls, and light work.

What if I have more questions? Reach out directly — by email at hello@oceancallingretreats.com or on WhatsApp at +60 17 506 3408. If anything feels unclear before you book, ask. That's what the contact is there for.
