Why Djibouti
In the hot desert Gulf of Tadjoura, near Arta, young whale sharks gather seasonally, most often from October to February, visited with licensed local boats. Mantas are possible, with turtles, guitarfish and reefs, and dolphins may be seen from the boat. Numbers vary a lot from year to year.
Conservation-led. Ocean Calling guests never chase, touch or bait animals.

Can we travel here ethically?
Ethics pass, with care
Good with the right operator. Here is how we choose.
Djibouti has a national whale shark decree from 2023. It allows one boat in the close zone, keeps swimmers at least 3 m from the head and 4 m from the tail, and bans touching, chasing, feeding and bright lights. Many young sharks carry old boat scars, and we could not yet confirm how well the rules are followed. We go only with a licensed operator, a slow boat and a small group, and we never promise a sighting.
