Ethics pass, with care. We found a way to visit this country that meets our animal-welfare standard, as long as we work with the right local operator. Checked by Ocean Calling on 5 Oct 2026. Why Qatar

Off Qatar's north coast, whale sharks gather each year from about April to September to feed on fish spawn. Qatar also has one of the largest dugong populations left, with 224 counted in a 2023 to 2026 ministry study, including 27 calves. The official whale shark tour does not allow swimming, touching or feeding, and we follow that. Summer is very hot and security news is unsettled, so Ocean Calling is only researching Qatar for now.

Conservation-led. Ocean Calling guests never chase, touch or bait animals.

Our ethics check

Can we travel here ethically?

Ethics pass, with care

Good with the right operator. Here is how we choose.

Qatar's official whale shark tour forbids swimming, touching and feeding, so we choose only boat watching and never a swim with whale sharks or dugongs. No law we found allows a commercial swim with either animal. Hawksbill nesting can be visited only as a conservation day. We are not announcing anything, because the US advises travellers to reconsider travel, Canada advises avoiding non-essential travel, and the UK reports strikes.

Checked 5 Oct 2026. Places change, so we look again every year.
