Story only

Story only, for now. We love learning about this place and its ocean, so we share its story here and do not sell trips yet. Checked by Ocean Calling on 6 Oct 2026. Sources: Turtle-watching in French Guiana: tips from a naturalist, France.fr; Amana Nature Reserve, Wikipedia; Why are French Guiana leatherbacks declining? State of the World's Sea Turtles (SWOT).

Why: The beaches around Awala-Yalimapo and the Amana Nature Reserve, protected since 1998, are among the world's great leatherback nesting sites, with females coming ashore from about February to July. A French ministerial order of 14 October 2005 forbids capturing turtles, destroying eggs or nests, and intentionally disturbing them. We follow the same simple rules: stay behind the turtle, use only a red light, keep quiet, and never touch her or block her path. If we ever visit, we would go only on a night led by the reserve's approved guides, and the hatchery work stays for the turtles, not for guests.

🧭 Travel advice, checked 30 Sep 2026. The UK FCDO shows no country-wide warning for French Guiana, only 'See our travel advice before travelling', and the advice covers health risks such as malaria and dengue. Why French Guiana

People come for Amazon edge forest, Kourou and Cayenne. On the west coast near Awala Yalimapo, leatherback nests are down by more than 95 percent in 20 years, and nesting females fell from 12,000 to 18,000 in the 1970s to about 20 in 2022 and 30 in 2023. Dogs, poaching and erosion are still threats. A nature reserve protects the beach. We tell the story of the loss and we do not go for now.

Conservation-led. Ocean Calling guests never chase, touch or bait animals.
