Why Sri Lanka
At Trincomalee and Nilaveli on the east coast, reefs bring blacktip reef sharks, green and hawksbill turtles, rays, morays and octopus, for freediving and diving. Blue whales, sperm whales and dolphins may be seen from the boat. Late March to April often brings very clear, warm and calm water.
Conservation-led. Ocean Calling guests never chase, touch or bait animals.

Can we travel here ethically?
Ethics pass, with care
Good with the right operator. Here is how we choose.
Sri Lanka has good whale watching rules: boats keep 100 m from whales, and entering the water is not allowed without special approval. But reports from 2024 and 2025 say many boats in Mirissa and Trincomalee still chase whales and put swimmers in the water. Ocean Calling only watches whales and dolphins from a licensed boat that keeps the distance, and freedives on the reefs instead.
